Bob Pierson

As Senior Pastor, he and his wife, served Christ United Methodist Church in Tulsa, OK for 37 years, growing it from an attendance of 200 to over 1600.   He also helped found the Large Church Initiative of the United Methodist Church and served as its chairman for 14 years.  He is presently the Executive Director of CUGM, an ecumenical organization created by Dr. Robert Schuller.  He has served as chairperson of Mission Evangelism for the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, and as chairperson of multiple boards and committees of the United Methodist Church in Oklahoma. He is author of the book Needs-Based Evangelism.   Bob and Delia work together in their ministry which focuses particularly on church growth, leadership and management, discipleship, worship, and world missions.

Consulting

Dr. Pierson provides help, advice, counsel, and direction for pastors, church staff and local church leaders in the areas of church and ministry administration, management, growth and evangelism. These consultations are provided out of years of successfully pastoring a large United Methodist Church and providing leadership of the Large Church Initiative of the United Methodist Church for fourteen years.  Dr. Pierson is also the chairman of the Clergy United for Growth and Ministry which is an ecumenical organization of pastors of larger churches, and has been a leader in the Oklahoma Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church for over 30 years.

Consultation contractual arrangements can be made for a period of 4-12 months which will involve several visits to the church site and regular telephone coaching with the senior pastor and other church staff.  The consultation can also be a series of recommendations dealing with particularly tough decisions a church is facing, or such issues as staffing, financial management, local church public relations, effective preaching, and effective worship direction.

Needs-Based Evangelism

One of the most effective ways to reach people for Christ is to find what their needs are and then try to provide for those needs in the life of the church. Needs-Based Evangelism is the book that Dr. Pierson has written on this topic. Many of today's growing mainline protestant churches have used this approach to develop their ministries and reach new people. It is based clearly on the teachings of Christ.

Leadership Nexus

Leadership Nexus exists to help the church be more effective in proclaiming the gospel to the world.  After serving as pastor of Christ United Methodist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma for over 30 years, I realized that much of what had helped me effectively develop that church was what I had learned from others. Networking is the best means of learning how to be effective. I had the opportunity to serve as chairman of the Large Church Initiative of the United Methodist Church for 13 years.  During that time I helped organize training events across the denomination for over 3,000 larger United Methodist churches. The key to the success of these events was sharing and learning from each other about our accomplishments and our mistakes. The lessons learned at these events enabled all of us to do a better job for God.

I also serve as Executive Director of CUGM, which is an ecumenical organization founded by Dr. Robert Schuller and others for pastors of larger churches. The great power of this fellowship is what we learn from each other no matter our denomination. I have created Leadership Nexus to continue this network of peers sharing and learning from each other.

The definition of nexus is "a link, a means of connection, a core or center."  That is exactly what we hope to be - a link and a central core to connect leaders through training events, support and communication. Leadership Nexus exists for those local churches and Christian organizations seeking excellence in doing the work of the kingdom of God.

The focus of Leadership Nexus is effectiveness. To put it simply - how can we do a better job? When I reflect on my early education for the ministry, there was so much I just did not understand, and so much I was never taught. All of us in church leadership today need ways to equip ourselves for effectiveness. The purpose of Leadership Nexus is networking together for effectiveness in God's work.  I hope you will join us in this endeavor!

Effective Evangelism

Dr. Bob Pierson's book, Needs-Based Evangelism, has become a best seller across the church. He has done numerous workshops on evangelism based on his book.  This approach for evangelism always creates significant growth in new church members and committed leaders! (Click here for a detailed description of the training)

The local church part of the training is done in three steps-motivation, training, and planning.  First, it begins with Dr. Pierson preaching on Sunday morning offering motivation for beginning a needs-based evangelism program.

Second, a training program in evangelism is offered on Sunday afternoon for the members. Third, Dr. Pierson will hold an evangelistic planning session to help the local church develop clear and definitive plans for growth.  This includes recruiting the teams to carry out the plans.

The second phase of this evangelistic training is to offer an evangelism workshop on Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for clergy, staff and lay leaders of other local churches in the area.
